How to become a Clarkstown Police Officer

Candidates are required to take a New York State written civil service examination, which is administered by the Rockland County Department of Personnel. An application to take the exam can be obtained through the Rockland County Department of Personnel once the enrollment period has been announced or by clicking here. The written exam is scheduled only once every four years. Candidates who pass the written examination will be invited in numerical order to participate in a physical ability test, background investigation, fingerprint check, drug screening, polygraph and oral interview. If given a conditional offer of employment, candidates must also pass medical and psychological examinations prior to employment.

Education and Experience: Must possess a high school diploma, equivalency diploma or Armed Forces GED. Candidates must also have either two years of full time paid work experience, or two years of active military service or 60 college credits after high school. Any equivalent combination is also qualifying.

Physical and Other Requirements: Must be between the ages of 19 and 35 by date of examination and a minimum of 20 years of age and a U.S. citizen by date of appointment. Applicants must also be a legal resident of Rockland , Orange , Putnam, Westchester , Dutchess, Sullivan , Ulster , Nassau , Suffolk , Bronx , New York , or Queens Counties .

ESTABLISHED.

License: Possess a valid New York driver’s license by date of appointment. Candidates with prior police experience must provide proof of completion of a basic Police Officer Academy recognized by the New York State Office of Public Safety.

Qualifications are determined by the Rockland County Department of Personnel and may be subject to change.
