E-NEWS ALERT
This summer, many of us will be digging into the ground surrounding our homes, in some cases for major projects, and in other cases for minor ones like planting a tree or installing a fence. According to Dig Safely New York, a not for profit agency that coordinates utility mark outs in the State, every year thousands of individuals are injured because they accidentally strike a utility line while digging.
To make construction safer, New York State requires contractors, utility companies installing infrastructure, and do it yourselfers to mark out utility lines and pipes on your property. In the Town of Clarkstown, you may see mark out flags on lawns or spray painted streets and driveways, cautioning landowners and contractors to proceed carefully with digging. While most of the mark outs occur within the first ten feet from the curb, which is the Town's right of way, occasionally residents may see marks on their private property. Utility companies should provide notice of the need to mark out your property and restore your property once their work is complete. To identify which utility has marked out your property, please refer to the work order coding table below.
white - proposed excavation
pink - temporary survey
dark orange- electric
yellow - gas, oil, steam, petroleum
light orange - communication, TV
purple - potable water
maroon - reclaimed water, irrigation
green - sewer and drain lines
If you have further questions about mark outs on your property or in your neighborhood, please call the Clarkstown Highway Department at 845-623-7500.
