Free Potassium Iodide Pills Available at Clarkstown Town Hall

Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet announces the availability of free Potassium Iodide Pills at the Clarkstown Town Clerk’s Office.  In 2001, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised that in the event of a radiological emergency, people should take a drug that would help protect them from thyroid cancer. This drug is called potassium iodide (KI). Mr. Sweet stated “In light of the recent tragic events in Japan, several residents have asked about the availability of the potassium iodide pills for local residents.  Our office continues to distribute these pills as a preventative measure in case of a radiological emergency.”

Keeping a dose of potassium iodide for every household member is a prudent precautionary measure, especially for those who live within ten miles of a nuclear power plant and who may be exposed to radiation from a nuclear plant emergency. The distributing of KI pills now is strictly a preparedness measure and not in response to any imminent danger or threat.  Mr. Sweet also stated “As Town Clerk I will continue to help Clarkstown residents by take proactive steps to assist them in any way possible.”

Rockland residents (18 and over) may obtain individual doses of potassium iodide for each household member, available in tablet form.  Residents will be asked to read the information packet and dosage information prior to signing out the medication.

A one-day supply of potassium iodide will be distributed at the Clarkstown Town Clerk’s Office, 10 Maple Avenue, New City, NY, 10956.  For more information, please visit the helpful link section of the Town Clerk’s web site,, or call Justin Sweet at (845) 639-2010.
